A brief history of the Louis Philippe mirror
In the past, the mirrors of great monarchs were recognizable by their heavily decorated cornices. But during the reign of Louis-Philippe, a bourgeois style developed, less concerned with originality than with comfort. Louis-Philippe mirrors were therefore intended to be simpler and more refined. Unlike mirrors from previous eras, the wood was no longer carved, but molded and coated with a glue-based primer. The top of the mirror frame is rounded, in the shape of a gendarme's hat. For decoration, pearls or acanthus leaves at the bottom emphasize the cornice with a gold-leaf effect that illuminates the whole piece. Large mirrors installed on mantels bring brightness and perspective into living spaces.
