A brief history of the chest of drawers
Its name says it all: it was born to be "convenient," replacing deep chests where everything was piled up in a jumble. Appearing during the reign of Louis XIV, it was such a prestigious display piece that it often took pride of place in reception rooms rather than walk-in closets. It introduced the sliding drawer, a revolution that finally made it possible to access one's belongings without emptying everything out. Whether called a "sauteuse" (on high legs) or a "tombeau" (tomb) chest, it is defined by its generous top and a front punctuated by two or three rows of drawers.
