A little history of the chest of drawers
Its name says it all: it was born to be "convenient" (commode), replacing the deep chests where everything was piled up haphazardly. Appearing during the reign of Louis XIV, it was such a prestigious piece of parade furniture that it often held pride of place in reception bedrooms rather than in wardrobes. It introduced the sliding drawer, a revolution that finally allowed one to access their belongings without emptying everything out. Whether called a "commode sauteuse" (on high legs) or a "commode tombeau," it is defined by its generous top and its front rhythmic with two or three rows of drawers.
