A brief history of the commode
Its name says it all: it was born to be "convenient" (commode), replacing deep chests where everything was piled up in a jumble. Appearing during the reign of Louis XIV, it was such a prestigious display piece that it often took pride of place in reception bedrooms rather than in wardrobes. It introduced the sliding drawer, a revolution that finally made it possible to access one's belongings without emptying everything out. Whether called a "commode sauteuse" (on high legs) or a "commode tombeau" (tomb chest), it is defined by its generous top and its facade punctuated by two or three rows of drawers.
