A brief history of the armchair
While a chair is made for working or dining, the armchair emerged in the 17th century with a single purpose: rest. Its name derives from the Old French "faudesteuil," a folding seat for dignitaries, but it evolved under Louis XV to become the comfortable piece of furniture with armrests we know today. Unlike a standard chair, it features a wider seat and a tilted backrest, inviting conversation rather than a rigid posture. Whether it is a "bergère" with enclosed sides to shelter from drafts or a lighter "bridge" chair, it embodies the evolution of the art of living.
