A Brief History of the Armchair
While chairs were designed for work or dining, the armchair emerged in the 17th century with a single purpose: rest. Its name derives from the Old French "faudesteuil," a dignitary's folding seat, but it evolved under Louis XV to become this comfortable piece of furniture equipped with armrests. Unlike the chair, it favored a wider seat and a reclined back, inviting conversation rather than a rigid posture. Whether it was a "bergère" with full sides to protect from drafts or a lighter "bridge" armchair, it embodies the evolution of the art of living.
