Ernest, the caned and bentwood armchair No. 1623

This vintage bentwood armchair complements a country-style interior with its dark and natural wood tones and cane seat. Its wooden frame forms a wraparound backrest, while the seat invites you to sit comfortably in a living room or bedroom. The cane lightens the overall look and pairs beautifully with a wool rug, a wooden side table or a lamp placed beside it. Light signs of wear are present.

A brief history of the armchair
While chairs are designed for work or dining, the armchair emerged in the 17th century with a single purpose: relaxation. Its name derives from the Old French “faudesteuil,” a folding seat used by dignitaries, but it came into its own under Louis XV, becoming a comfortable piece of furniture with armrests. Unlike a chair, it features a wider seat and a sloping back, inviting conversation rather than rigid posture. Whether it is a “bergère,” with padded sides to shelter from drafts, or a lighter “bridge” armchair, it embodies the evolution of the art of living.
