A brief history of the armchair
While the chair was made for work or dining, the armchair was born in the 17th century for a single purpose: rest. Its name derives from the Old French "faudesteuil," a folding seat for dignitaries, but it evolved under Louis XV to become the piece of comfortable furniture equipped with armrests that we know today. Unlike the chair, it features a wider seat and a reclined back, inviting conversation rather than a rigid posture. Whether it is a "bergère" with upholstered sides to shield against drafts or a lighter "bridge" armchair, it embodies the evolution of the art of living.
