A brief history of the armchair
While the chair is designed for work or dining, the armchair emerged in the 17th century with a single purpose: rest. Its name derives from the Old French "faudesteuil," a dignitary's folding seat, but it gained independence under Louis XV to become a comfortable piece of furniture with armrests.
