Its generous backrest and comfortable seat make it an ideal piece for creating a vignette in a living room, bedroom, or sunroom. A brief history of the armchair
While the chair was made for work or dining, the armchair emerged in the 17th century with a single mission: rest. Its name derives from the Old French "faudesteuil," a folding seat for dignitaries, but it came into its own under Louis XV to become the piece of furniture for comfort featuring armrests. Unlike the chair, it prioritizes a wider seat and a reclined backrest, inviting conversation rather than rigid posture. Whether it is a "bergère" with enclosed sides to shield against drafts or a lighter "bridge" chair, it embodies the evolution of the art of living.
