A Brief History of the Desk
It all began with the "bure," a thick, brown wool cloth that covered the tables of copyist monks to protect their precious manuscripts. By extension, the table itself eventually took the name of the fabric that covered it: the desk. Unlike the secretary, it is defined by its wide fixed top and visible base, offering an unadorned space for reflection. Also called a "flat-top desk," it remains the centerpiece for anchoring a workspace with character.
