A Brief History of the Desk
It all began with the "bure," a thick brown woolen cloth that covered the tables of copyist monks to protect their precious manuscripts. By extension, the table itself eventually took on the name of the fabric that covered it: the bureau (desk). Unlike a secretary desk, it is defined by its wide, fixed top and visible base, offering an unadorned space for reflection. Also called a "flat desk," it remains the centerpiece for anchoring a workspace with character.
