A brief history of the desk
It all began with the "bure," a thick, brown wool cloth that covered the tables of monastic scribes to protect their precious manuscripts. By extension, the table itself eventually took the name of the fabric that covered it: the bureau (desk). Unlike a secretary desk, it is defined by its wide fixed top and visible legs, offering an uncluttered space for reflection. Also known as a "flat desk," it remains the centerpiece for grounding a workspace with character.
