A brief history of the desk
It all began with the "bure," a thick, brown wool cloth that covered the tables of copyist monks to protect their precious manuscripts. By extension, the table itself eventually took the name of the fabric that covered it: the "bureau." Unlike the secretary desk, it is defined by its large fixed top and visible legs, offering a workspace without artifice. Also known as a "flat-top desk," it remains a centerpiece for grounding a workspace with character.
