A brief history of the desk
It all started with the "bure," a thick, brown wool cloth that covered the tables of monastic scribes to protect their precious manuscripts. By extension, the table itself eventually took the name of the fabric that covered it: the "bureau" (desk). Unlike a secretaire, it is defined by its wide, fixed top and visible legs, offering a space for reflection without artifice.
