A Brief History of the Desk
It all began with the "bure," a thick, brown woolen cloth that covered the tables of monastic scribes to protect their precious manuscripts. By extension, the table itself eventually took the name of the fabric that covered it: the bureau (desk). Unlike a secretary desk, it is defined by its wide, fixed top and visible base, offering a straightforward space for reflection. Also known as a "flat-top desk," it remains the centerpiece for anchoring a workspace with character.
