A brief history of the desk
It all started with the "bure," a thick, brown woolen cloth that covered the tables of copyist monks to protect their precious manuscripts. By extension, the table itself eventually took the name of the fabric that covered it: the desk (bureau in French). Unlike the secretary, it is defined by its large fixed top and visible legs, offering a space for reflection without embellishment. Also known as a "flat desk," it remains the centerpiece for anchoring a workspace with character.
