A Brief History of the Desk
It all began with the "bure," a thick, brown wool cloth that covered the tables of monastic scribes to protect their precious manuscripts. By extension, the table itself eventually took on the name of the fabric that covered it: the bureau (desk). Unlike the secretary, it is defined by its wide, fixed top and visible legs, offering an uncluttered space for reflection. Also known as a "flat-top desk," it remains the centerpiece for anchoring a workspace with character.
