A Brief History of the Desk
It all began with "bure", the thick brown wool cloth that covered the tables of copying monks to protect their precious manuscripts. By extension, the table itself eventually took the name of the fabric that covered it: the "bureau" (desk). Unlike the secretary desk, it is defined by its large fixed top and visible legs, offering an unadorned space for reflection.
