A Brief History of the Desk
It all began with the "bure," a thick, brown wool cloth that covered the tables of copyist monks to protect their precious manuscripts. By extension, the table itself eventually took the name of the fabric that covered it: the desk (bureau in French). Unlike the secretary desk, it is defined by its wide fixed top and visible base, offering a space for reflection without frills. Also known as a "flat desk," it remains the centerpiece for anchoring a workspace with character.
