A Brief History of the Desk
It all began with the "bure," a thick, brown wool cloth that covered the tables of copyist monks to protect their precious manuscripts. By extension, the table itself eventually took the name of the fabric that covered it: the bureau (desk). Unlike a secretary, it is defined by its wide, fixed top and visible legs, offering a space for reflection without frills. Also known as a "flat desk," it remains the centerpiece for anchoring a workspace with character.
