A little history of the desk
It all began with the “bure,” a thick, brown wool cloth that covered the tables of copyist monks to protect their precious manuscripts. By extension, the table itself eventually took the name of the fabric that covered it: the bureau. Unlike a writing desk with drawers, it is defined by its broad, fixed top and exposed legs, offering an uncluttered space for thought. Also known as a “flat desk,” it remains the centerpiece for creating a distinctive workspace.
