A Brief History of the Desk
It all started with the "bure," a thick brown wool cloth that covered the tables of monastic scribes to protect their precious manuscripts. By extension, the table itself eventually took the name of the fabric that covered it: the "bureau" (desk). Unlike the secretary, it is defined by its wide, fixed top and exposed legs, offering an unadorned space for reflection. Also known as a "flat desk," it remains the centerpiece for anchoring a workspace with character.
