A brief history of the desk
It all started with the "bure," a thick brown woolen cloth that covered the tables of copyist monks to protect their precious manuscripts. By extension, the table itself eventually took the name of the fabric that covered it: the "bureau" (desk). Unlike a secretary, it is defined by its wide fixed top and visible legs, offering a straightforward space for reflection. Also known as a "flat-top desk," it remains the centerpiece for establishing a workspace with character.
