A brief history of the bench
Appearing in the 17th century, the bench is the elegant, upholstered version of the seat, designed for the salons of high society. Unlike a sofa, it is distinguished by its lack of a back or arms, favoring an airy silhouette and a Louis XVI or Empire style. Whether called a “piano bench” or a “bed-end bench,” today it fits into boudoir or vintage aesthetics and remains the ideal piece for dressing up a window or entryway.
