A brief history of the sewing box
Born in the 18th century as the "work table," the sewing box ("travailleuse" in French) was the creation of mechanical cabinetmakers who vied with each other in ingenuity to create furniture with secret compartments. Unlike a simple box, it is defined by its light legs and unfolding compartments designed to house threads and needles. Also called a "sewing box on legs," it can now be wonderfully repurposed as a charming bedside table or jewelry box.
