A brief history of the stool
As the oldest type of seat in history, the stool is the direct ancestor of the chair, from which it is distinguished by the absence of a backrest and armrests. In the Middle Ages, it was the universal seat for commoners, while among the nobility, the "right to a stool" became a highly codified court privilege, allowing ladies to sit in the presence of the king. Its structure, resting on three or four legs, is a feat of stability and lightness, designed to be tucked under a table or moved with ease. Whether made of raw farmhouse wood or in an industrial style, it now embodies the quintessential space-saving furniture, offering extra seating that never clutters the room.
