The rocking chair first appeared in English families in the 18th century. It reflected a new way of life in society, a society that yearned for more comfort and frivolity in their daily lives. The Thonet family manufacturer seized upon the model to reinvent the rocking chair using the steam-bent bentwood technique. The rocking chair caused a sensation in Europe and was imported to the United States, where the rocking chair became a staple of the American Empire style.
