A short history of the Louis Philippe mirror
At the time, the mirrors of the great monarchs were recognizable by their ornate cornices. But during the reign of Louis Philippe, a bourgeois style developed, less concerned with originality than with comfort. Louis Philippe's mirrors were then intended to be more sober and refined. Unlike mirrors of previous eras, the wood was no longer carved, but molded and coated with a glue primer. The top of the mirror frame is rounded, in the shape of a gendarme's hat. For decoration, pearls or acanthus leaves at the bottom highlight the cornice with a gilded gold leaf effect that illuminates the whole. The large mirrors installed on the fireplaces bring clarity and perspective to the living rooms.
