A brief history of the Louis Philippe mirror
At the time, the mirrors of great monarchs were recognizable by their cornices laden with decorations. But during Louis-Philippe's reign, a bourgeois style developed, less concerned with originality than with comfort. Louis-Philippe mirrors were therefore more sober and streamlined. Unlike mirrors from previous eras, the wood was no longer carved, but molded and coated with a glue primer. The top of the mirror frame is rounded, in the shape of a gendarme's hat. For decoration, pearls or acanthus leaves on the lower part highlight the cornice with a gilded effect using gold leaf that illuminates the whole. Large mirrors installed above fireplaces brought light and perspective to living rooms.
