A Brief History of the Armchair
A true wicker throne, the Emmanuelle armchair originates from Polynesia, where it served as a ceremonial seat for tribal chiefs. Its spectacular fan-shaped backrest, with intricate weaving fanning out to form a halo, was designed to protect the dignitary's head from drafts while asserting their presence. Initially called "Pomare armchair," it owes its current name to the global success of the eponymous 1970s film, which transformed it into an icon of bohemian and sensual design.
