A brief history of the desk
It all began with the "bure," a thick, brown wool cloth that covered the tables of monastic scribes to protect their precious manuscripts. By extension, the table itself eventually took the name of the fabric that covered it: the "bureau" (desk). Unlike a secretary desk, it is defined by its wide, fixed top and visible base, offering a straightforward space for contemplation. Also called a "flat desk," it remains the centerpiece for anchoring a workspace with character.
